►As any other place on earth Zanzibar has its customs and traditions which any visitor should respect. So make sure to read the requests to the end to avoid any collisions.
►First of all, you should wear loose and non-transparent clothing and not wear swim suits or other low-cut clothing in the villages or Stone Town.
►Topless or nude sunbathing is forbidden anywhere on Zanzibar or Pemba unless you are on private property.
►You also should avoid showing affection in public such as kissing, which is not usual to Zanzibaris, and might offend them.
►Don’t forget to ask permission when taking photos of local people as some of them might ask you to pay to take their photo.
►Do not take photos at sensitive government offices as the State House, Military bases, etc., you should ask your guide whether you can do it.
►Drinking alcohol in public is prohibited unless you do it on hotel and resort grounds, in bars and some restaurants.
►When visiting a church while a mass is being celebrated, adstain from talking and walking around the building until the service is over.
►Mosques are sacred places and actually non-Muslims are prohibited to enter. It is also not allowed to take pictures of the interior of a mosque from the doorway while prayers.
►During Ramadhan, the holy month of the Muslims, the locals refrain from eating, drinking and smoking during daylight hours from sunrise to sunset, and visitors should do the same in public.
►You are forbidden to buy or remove any turtle or coral products as well as most overseas countries prohibit the importation of most marine and animal products.
►Talk about the price with the owner before setting off, when using any form of transport. Pay on arrival or at the end of the trip. You may appreciate the tips at your sense.
►Ask the ID of anyone who offers you tourist services.
►Keep your valuables in a hotel safe and keep an eye on your electronic equipment and jewellery while touring.
►It is reasonable to carry a torch at night in the Stone town, and of course avoid walking alone.
►If you travel to the Stone Town (especially at nights) in groups and also when visiting the rural areas of Zanzibar, avoid walking or cycling to tourist attractions alone!
►You will need an international driving license, if you are going to rent any motor vehicles.
►Some of the narrowest streets are in fact public roads in the Stone town, so beware of traffic.
►If you use or possess any of illegal drugs you will be prosecuted for it.
►Avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, as it is the best way of Malaria prevention. Make sure to cover up after sunset and sleep under a mosquito net. You may also use mosquito repellent, which is also helpful.
►Exercise caution with regards to sexually transmitted diseases.
