Democratic Republic of Congo Democratic Republic of Congo also has a section of the Virunga Mountains Park called the Parc National des Virunga. The gorilla population has been in the news recently because several gorillas were brutally hacked to death.
Two parks in the Congo region have lowland gorillas to be observed. Here you may encounter the eastern lowland gorilla that is much rarer than the western lowland gorilla and their numbers are depleting rapidly mainly due to poaching and armed conflict in the region. At the Kahuzi-Biega National Park you may see the eastern lowland gorilla. The park had suffered enormously from the armed conflict raging on and off in this region for years now.
The Odzala National Park is home to the densest population of the western lowland gorilla. It is easier to get to it from Gabon. This is the only park where you can see gorillas in the open grass. The park has 5 tented camps some of which are only accessible by canoe. Definitely you should visit this park with a tour group, just for ease of travel.
Cameroon In Cameroon there are two parks where you can see lowland gorillas. The Korup National Park covers a large tract of rainforest and the Lac Lobeke National Park.
