The number is nearly double as many as in entire Europe and is the highest in West Africa apart from the Oban Hills at the easternmost part of Nigeria and western Cameroon. The majority of the total species are confined to rainforest or high forest areas, which are amongst the most endangered tropical habitats, threatened by both legal and illegal logging and open pit mining.  Some of the most thrilling and gorgeous species you may encounter in the following places: Atewa-Atwirebu Butterfly Sanctuary, the Atewa Range, Bobiri Forest Butterfly Sanctuary, Bunso Arboretum Butterfly Sanctuary.

Atewa-Atwirebu Butterfly Sanctuary is 10km north of Kibi, the magic forest of Atewa-Atwirebu. It boasts of over 150 different species of ferns and other flora. The sanctuary is full with the enchanting sounds of birds and insects including the "Papillio Antimactus", one of the largest butterflies in Africa.

The Atewa Range is the haven for several birds and rare butterfly species, as well as Africa’s largest butterfly, the Gaint Swallow.

Bobiri Forest Butterfly Sanctuary is located 20km on the Kumasi, Accra highway, a quiet research centre for the Forestry Research Institute showcasing an arboretum, forest hiking trails and a butterfly sanctuary, lodging, guiding and interpretative materials are also available.

The Bunso Arboretum Butterfly Sanctuary is a butterfly sanctuary within the 16.5 hectares. Guests may see many diverse kinds of butterflies flying around the arboretum.
