Hunting in Zimbabwe
zimbabwe-huntingZimbabwe has some of the finest mixed bag hunting opportunities in all of Africa. It is also a country that offers significant value for the costs of the various safaris. Excellent concessions for Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo, Lion as well as the wide variety of plainsgame have been secured on a long term basis for the exclusive safaris.

Zimbabwe does not have an official Closed Hunting Season but is governed by the weather so the general hunting season is April through November, with a few PAC hunts during the crop-growing period, December to March - mostly elephant in the communal farming areas, like Tsholotsho.

The game available in Zimbabwe is as follows: Elephant Bull, Buffalo Bull, Kudu, Waterbuck, Chobe Bushbuck, Hippo,  Zebra, Baboon, Bushpig, Bait, Impala, Hyena, Leopard, Lion, Buffalo, Cow, Sable Small Cats, Bush Duiker, Crocodile, Eland, Warthog, Klipspringer and Jackal.

It is suggested to take two rifles. The recommended caliber of guns and ammo is the first one should be in the .270 to .300 caliber range that you are familiar with and shoot with confidence. Scopes should be of good quality. The second rifle should be of .375 caliber or larger again with good quality variable power scope and you should feel comfortable to shoot with it. If you think of doing any significant amount of bird hunting then consider bringing a shotgun as well. You can’t bring more than 3 firearms into the country.

As for the quantity of ammo, which you can take, is primarily controlled by airline regulations that allow a maximum of 11 pounds of ammo per passenger. It is based on the length of safari as well as the overall number of species you want to hunt; so consider bringing good quality soft point ammo calculated at 2 rounds per specie to be hunted or a maximum of 60 rounds of soft point ammo. For the heavier caliber, the recommendation is calculating 3 rounds per specie that you would plan to use the heavier rifle for a maximum again of 60 rounds. If so you will not break any airline regulations. The technical allowance for all of the African countries is a maximum of 100 rounds per firearm but it is rather hard to utilize this amount of ammo and so to avoid any “hassles” at the departure airport try not to exceed this 11 pound allowance.
