Ethiopia Hunting
Afar/ Danaki Region
These areas are located east and north of Addis Ababa. The region varies from semi desert to some acacia type thickets. There are many rock outcroppings and some hunters consider this territory to be very much like West Texas or Southern Masailand in Tanzania. Many long camel caravans are encountered in this region. Endemic species like the Northern Gerenuk, Soemmerrings Gazelle, Besia Oryx, Cordeaux and Salt’s Dik Dik’s along with Lesser Kudu, Abyssinian Greater Kudu, Abyssinian Bushbuck, Hamadryas Baboon, Abyssinian Bohor Reedbuck, Warthog, Lion, Hyena, Serval, Jackal, Porcupine and Ostrich are found in the region. Hunting in the Afar/Danakil is a definitely unique hunting experience.

The recommended caliber of guns and ammo while hunting in the Mountain Nyala a rifle to .338 caliber that you feel comfortable with possible shots of up to 400 yards. Good quality optics/scopes are a must for hunting in the Mountain Nyala. If you are considering buffalo or lion being hunted than a second rifle in the .375 caliber or larger should also be brought. In Ethiopia, you can temporarily import a maximum of two rifles per hunter.

The quantity of the ammo which you can take is as in any other African country is primarily controlled by airline regulations, and is a maximum of 11 pounds of ammo per passenger. It is, first of all, based on the length of safari as well as the overall number of species you desire to hunt, but the prime suggestion is to bring good quality soft point ammo calculated at 2 rounds per specie to be hunted or a maximum of 60 rounds of soft point ammo. If you will use heavier caliber, the recommendation is calculating 3 rounds per specie that you would plan to use the heavier rifle for a maximum again of 60 rounds. This should keep you within the airline regulations. The technical allowance for all of the African countries is a maximum of 100 rounds per firearm but it is almost impossible to utilize this amount of ammo and the best idea in this case is not to exceed this 11 pound allowance in order to avoid possible “hassles” at the departure airport.
