Burkina Faso Hunting
Baiting is prohibited for all game. Lion is hunted on foot.  This is a fair way of hunting, and even if the trophy is not as impressive as the ones depicted in books and periodicals, it is the most exciting way of hunting a lion.

Here are outstanding opportunities for wing shooting.  Actually the majority of hunters set off there for small game and wing shooters do not intrude upon the big game areas.

Accommodation is rather diverse and comfortable.  Hunting in Burkina Faso is generally done from camps, in some areas a night or two can be spent in tent camps in order to avoid prolonged vehicle journeys.

Game licenses are of two sorts: permits for big game and for small game, and the latter includes warthog, oribi, red flanked duiker and baboon, birds and the African hare.  It is recommended to take both big game and small game licenses, as the first one big game license alone may not meet for all the hunter’s needs.  Francolin, ducks, geese, doves, pigeons and sand grouse are available here.

The trophy fees are fixed by the Burkina Faso government. The government sets minimum measurements for trophies. Some tour providers also add a “success-premium” to the official trophy fees.  The trophy fee is usually doubled if a female is shot.

Safari outfitters also should set quotas for their clients, usually as a factor of the duration of the hunt. Hence, the longer the hunt, the more species you can shoot. Safari daily rates may start at 412 €. Daily rates for non-hunting individuals accompanying the hunt usually start at 30 €.

It is also advisable for clients to look at the quantity of big game species that can be hunted, and also which species are out of the list.  Make sure you have exact information about the outfitter when booking a hunt. You should also consider the real state of the operator’s equipment, like hunting cars. It is definitely better to buy somewhat more expensive itinerary than to waste a lot of time waiting for broken cars to be repaired or walking back to the camp.

Some outfits offer special lion hunts, which may cost somewhat higher or just be with more extended duration.  In such cases, you can normally only shoot a lion. But what if you hunt the game on the second or third day?  Of course, you may sit near the swimming pool (or at the bar) or shoot birds, but if you pay big game rates it is reasonable to consider with the outfitter or his representative the opportunities of shooting other species of game.

The big game hunting territories are located in the southeastern part of the country.  The areal is essentially made up of wood-savannah dispersed by some more or less open plains and gallery forests, usually dried up during the hot season.
