Hunting Types

As any kind of sport hunting can be strikingly diverse. Dart safaris, bow hunting (blind hunting still hunting and stalking) and traditional rifle hunting are among those types which are common on the price list.

Dart safaris

A new trend in hunting is bagging your trophy with a dart gun. It is a classic African safari in all aspects except the prey is tranquilized, measured, photographed and returned to its habitat safe and unharmed. You are required to take out compulsory insurance cover and pay a small utilization fee for each animal darted.

Daily rates for darting any of the Big Five are about $ 750 per day. Dart Safaris are very limited and done strictly on permitted location.

Bow hunting

The recommended equipment for safari bow hunting is two well-tuned hunting bows of draw weight not less than 50 lbs, or 70 lbs if you will be hunting African big game. Long bow hunting, recurve bow hunting and compound bow hunting is permitted, but crossbows are prohibited. Arrows can be made out of wood, fiberglass, carbon or aluminum and the shaft should be at least of 19.68 inches (500 mm) long. The arrows should be fitted with heads of modern configuration with minimum two cutting blades and the least length and width of 1 inch (26 mm). Arrow-heads may not be spiked or have notched edges; mechanical arrow-heads are legal in Namibia. Special arrow points such as judo points, bird points or blunt points may be used for bow hunting birds only. Bring a sufficient amount of arrows, strings and other spares with you, as virtually bow hunting equipment is not that available in Africa. The most suitable colors for camouflage are a combination of muted gray, brown and yellow.

Rifle hunting

Due to developed infrastructure hunting in Africa regained its popularity. This destination lures the experienced hunters as well as those for whom it will be the first abroad hunting. But as you are going to another country you should know some essentials. First of all, and that is the most typical question, you should know what caliber rifle you should bring on an Africa hunting safari. The answer is that you may take the rifle that you shoot the best with, but it should meet the minimum legal standards for the country and game you are hunting. Altogether for plains game any rifle above .270 Winchester will do fine since you use the best quality bullets available. If you have a 300 Magnum of any type from 300 WSM to 300 Dakota that would be preferable on plains game but if you do not shoot it well do not take to Africa. Now for dangerous game as Cape buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, or rhino most countries require at least a .375 caliber.
